Hello and welcome to my site!

I invite you to take a look around and visit my shop to see my most recent paintings.

About me and my artwork:

I’m part California city girl and part midwestern country girl.  Both of those worlds inhabit my artwork and are connected through a love of nature with a thread of family heritage mixed in.

My studio is in San Francisco and I’m an avid walker and urban hiker. Most of the time I have a small sketchbook and an assortment of pens, pencils and watercolors to sketch the natural beauty that can be found all over this city. From the Pacific Ocean to the many peaks and parks, I’m always finding new inspiration to bring into my artwork.

Painting is my first love.

Although I do pursue creativity from many outlets including photography and drawing, I’m always drawn back to painting.  And my tool of choice to paint with are palette knives (or painting knives as I like to call them).

Once I discovered painting knives, I started developing my own techniques for building layers, adding texture and developing a composition. I enjoy the freedom and looseness that painting knives provide on all types of surfaces from canvas to panels and wood.

My painting style can range from minimal abstract compositions to expressionistic bursts of color and form.

What unites these different styles and what I like to explore is texture, the interaction of colors and visual storytelling on canvas.

I focus on capturing a moment or feeling in my paintings.

I will typically complete my expressionist paintings in one session.  I work quickly and intuitively, applying thick layers of paint using my favorite painting knives and finishing up before the acrylic paint becomes too tacky to work with.

In contrast, my minimalist colorscape paintings are slowly built up over time. They can have from five to ten layers of paint. As the composition builds up, the final result is a painting with little bits of history and mystery from the prior paint layers peaking through.

Color tonality, the push and pull of complimentary colors and the challenge of mixing up a paint color to match a flower petal or leaf I found on a walk are pure enjoyment for me as well as creating art that captures a moment or emotion.
